Response Prep for " "Brand Malala" : Western Exploitation of a Schoolgirl "

The social perspectives revealed in the text shed a light on the corruption of the society in Pakistan. Taliban is in control and is destroying gender equality and gender justice. Also, Carol shows that even though Malala and some people are actually trying to improve the situation of women, there are just a few men who are encouraged to do so. Then, this text shows the aspect of the society now in Pakistan and stresses a very important social problem which is gender justice.

As for the emotional perspective, the writer is clearly mad about the fact that Malala is being exploited by a lot in the west while others and women especially are actually being suppressed. Carol’s tone seems to be annoyed and mad throughout the text, it’s clearly shown through her ironic sentences that are found in many parts of the text, where she makes a joke related to her argument in order to show to what extent she’s angry.

The text is argumentative. The rhetorical mode is impersonal since the writer is addressing   problem which is Malala and her being exploited, along with gender justice. Concerning the analyzing style, Carol uses a lot of quotation marks in the text where she wanted the words to seem ironic. Her sentences are neither too long nor too short for she wants the readers to fully gasp her point of view and her argument. On the other hand, there are several times when Carol’s intentions were ambiguous (when she put a word inside quotations which makes us wonder what she really means). This actually created depth for the text and made us think about the problem she is posing, and her position regarding this problem.

As for the logical perspective, Carol clearly states that she is not against Malala as a person, but she believes that she’s being exploited while many others are being suppressed. She presents a lot of evidence to strengthen her point like real life events and the opinions of experts in the field of gender justice. She uses the deductive method where she stated her argument at the beginning of the text which is that Malala is being exploited, and then she defended her stand with evidence and explained it.

Finally, concerning the ethical perspective. Carol’s text is clearly concerned with gender justice and other social problems. Carole believes that all people especially women who are fighting for justice should be heard and not just Malala because she was shot by Taliban. Carol wants justice; she is interested in the welfare of the community. Also, she is against what Malala's mentors are doing, they're using her and her circumstances just to get profit and advertisement, which she views as wrong.
