Summary

In the article “The Revolution Will Not be Polite: The Issue of Nice Versus Good “, Rachael differentiates between being “nice” and being “good” (or ethical) since people are frequently mixing them up which is threatening social justice which is reached by completely demolishing privileges and systematic marginalization. She also explains that people often hide their true selves behind nice words in order to be in more power over the other person, which gives them a bigger chance at abusing them and taking advantage of them, for we’ve always been taught that nice people are always good and just so we feel safe around them. On another note, Rachael explains first how being privileged is being given rights and opportunities by the laws and socio-cultural norms, and then how being marginalized is when economic, cultural and social systems don’t do well to a person. In addition, Rachael clarifies how niceness gives the abusers an excuse to get away with what they are doing to the oppressed and silence them. Finally, She concludes that social justice cannot be achieved if people fight for their rights in a “nice” way, they should rather fight their oppressors, frankly speaking their minds without having to think twice whether they were nice or not, because even if they weren’t, they’d still be ethical and just for sure.

  1. Check moodle for your grade. You can re-write the main idea to be more clear. She doesnt mention the issue of feeling safe. Good ending.
