""Brand Malala": Western Exploitation of a Schoolgirl" Response Prep.

Social Perspective:

In the text ""Brand Malala": Western Exploitation of a Schoolgirl" the author "Carol Anne Grayson" clarifies the social perspective be referring to the politicians and the medias exploitation of Malala's story "western politicians and media alike have seized upon a very profitable "alliance" with young Pakistani schoolgirl" (Grayson, pg.594) Politicians and the media exploit peoples problems (like Malala's) for their own benefit, according to Grayson. Not to mention Grayson explains thoroughly to the readers the problem of inequality, where many other British and nonBritish women with problems like Malala's, if not worse, are disregarded and ignored by politicians and the media. "many women that have been harmed in Britain and received not such support" (Grayson, pg.596).

Emotional Perspective:

Grayson uses a tone of frustration and anger, showing it by her use of diction "Juvenile survivors of torture" (Grayson, pg. 595) and syntax "This does not help the cause of any woman while one is exploited and others are suppressed!" (Grayson, pg. 598). The overall mood of the text is depressing. leaving the the reader to think about the injustice and inequality in the world, and the unfair benefits the politicians and media receive from the misery of others.

Rhetorical Perspective:

The text is an argumentative, impersonal blog entry, by the blogger "Carol Anne Grayson". Where she tends to show an inquisitive and ironic style of writing, by using quotation marks and rhetorical questions. She places quotation marks on single words like "deserving" and "save", these quotations add the sense of irony because it shows a state of mocking, as if the word has another meaning to it. On the other hand the rhetoric questions give inquisition to the text "What quality of care and support did they receive? Are they represented by PR companies?" (Grayson, pg. 596) The questions cause the reader to think and generate his/her own opinion about the matter.

Logical Perspective:

The logical perspective in the text is inductive, hence many paragraphs start with the specific idea of "Malala" and expand into a more general idea, like injustice. In the text Grayson gives her arguments with justified fact. However there is a fallacy in her blog post, she hastily generalizes. She claims that all western media, politicians and governments are unfair, unjust and unhelpful. They do not intend in helping anyone unless they are able to benefit off it. "western politicians and media alike have seized upon a very profitable "alliance" with young Pakistani schoolgirl" (Grayson, pg.594).

Ethical Perspective:

Grayson speaks of inequality and injustice highly in the text, verifying it as a crime against Ethics. Helping a woman for exploitation is unethical, in Grayson's point of view. Every woman should have the rights, privileges and opportunities she deserves, whether she fits into the popular narrative of exploitation or not.

  1. Social: you are not quoting correctly. The quote needs to fit into the sentence better. + MLA=no pg.= no comma=period at the end of the ). Justify better.
    Emotional: WOW! Great Justification.
    Rhetorical: The text is not ironic, but sarcastic. Ok Justification: you can do more.
    Mocking=good.
    Logical: Little justification, but GREAT analysis.
    Ethical: You are missing the point about gender rights in England.
    GREAT JOB!
