Summary by Manal Hamdon

In the text "The Revolution Will Not Be Polite: The Issue of Nice Versus Good", the author Rachael expresses her views and evident irritation on the disorientation between being ethically good, and being nice. Throughout the text she enlightens the differences between the two, strongly rebutting the common thought that to achieve social justice, niceness has to be in order. Rachael defines social justice as a means to "destroy systematic marginalization and privilege". She strongly believes that everyone should have equal rights and privileges, and she states her disgust for the people who sugar coat oppressive insults for the sake of being nice. Mistaking niceness for goodness can also put you in a position of control and power to those who are marginalized. By being nice, you have a hold you can use over another. However, being mean to someone doesn't necessarily mean being oppressive, since oppression is not about "hurt feelings", its about equal rights and privilege.Society cannot evolve if their idea of what society is remains beneath the rock.

  1. Check moodle for your grade. The main idea is too broad. Don't quote in summary. You follow the order of the text, but you seem to insinuate her tone, which is analysis and not summary.
